Things to Consider When Moving Into an Apartment

By Carelyn Tiburcio on August 27, 2016

Moving into my new apartment has been an exciting and unique experience for me. Many people are still moving into their apartments at this time of year. Yes, it is very cool to finally have your own place, but there are many things that I had to consider when choosing the right apartment. I didn’t just choose the first one I saw but instead I went through a process. Here are some things to have in mind when choosing an apartment.

Roommates

Make sure you choose trustworthy people to live with. Don’t choose people that are just fun and that you barely know. Choose people that you know have similar habits as you. Having roommates that have completely different habits as you may end up in many arguments. If you can’t find enough people to live with, ask a worker at the apartment office to sign you up for a roommate match. With the roommate match, you can state the time that you go to sleep, how often you clean, and so much more. The manager will definitely find you a similar roommate.

Transportation

Since you’re going to be living off campus, you need to find a way to get to school everyday. Having a car helps but do you really want to deal with the crowded parking garages? That’s why distance and transportation are extremely important factors to consider. Thankfully, college towns provide many methods of transportation for students. There are usually buses that can take you directly to school so be aware of any bus stops near the apartment. Some apartment places are even walking distance from campus.

Visit the Complex Numerous Times

Besides taking an apartment tour, visit the complex without a tour guide. Go on a weekend or during a regular school day. Check out how the people are and what events go on. You may like the tour but you never know what it’s really like. Going on this “personal tour” gives you a more realistic look on where you could possibly be living.

Make Sure All the Necessities are There

Some apartment places may trick you with their apartment tours, showing you all the nice decorations but not mentioning what is actually included in the apartment. Make sure you ask questions and write down all that the apartment place has to offer. Ask questions about laundry machines, electricity, water, and anything else that you have in mind. Writing down all that the apartment offers can help you compare different ones and help you decide which one offers you more for a better price.

Finding an apartment is not a simple process but it is definitely not impossible! Take all of this information into consideration and I’m sure that you’ll have no trouble in your apartment search.
